In the French Senate, it is proposed to adopt sanctions against Azerbaijan in connection with recent aggressions and the withdrawal of Azerbaijani troops from the territory of Armenia, a resolution demanding the immediate and unconditional repatriation of Armenian prisoners of war, against which women protested in front of the French embassy in Baku.
The draft resolution, which was published on the official website of the upper house of the French Parliament, strongly condemns the Azerbaijani aggression in the Lachin Corridor connecting Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh in early August of this year and on September 13-14 in the southern and southeastern regions of the sovereign territory of Armenia.
If the draft is adopted, the Senate will require the French government to follow up so that the UN Security Council, where the international community condemned the Azerbaijani aggression during an emergency session, applies to the International Criminal Court “on the issue of Azerbaijani aggression on the sovereign territory of the Republic of Armenia, including to investigate mass and war crimes.”
The project calls on the government to consider with European partners more decisive and appropriate responses to the new aggressions of Azerbaijan, including confiscation of assets of Azerbaijani leaders and an embargo on gas and oil exports from Azerbaijan.
The draft Senate resolution urges the French government to “show by all means France’s support for Armenia, considering in particular the strengthening of Armenia’s defense capabilities” and “immediately take all measures to ensure the safety of the Armenian and Armenian populations within internationally recognized borders.”
The draft also reaffirms the “need to recognize the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh”, about which the two chambers of the French Parliament had adopted resolutions not long after the ceasefire in the 44-day war of 2020.
