“We are not against the development and improvement of Armenia-Azerbaijan relations, but there should be reservations,” Artsakh Foreign Minister Davit Babayan stated during the “Facebook press conference” program of “Azatutyun”.
“Ultimately, we need to understand what can be expected of the Armenian civilization if Artsakh is suddenly destroyed, and then there will be terrible, deadly dangers for mother Armenia, and if there is no mother Armenia, what is the Diaspora,” added Babayan.
Answering the question of why they don’t announce that “whatever paper Armenia signs, we will not accept it”, Davit Babayan responded. “What does “whatever it signs” mean? It may be something good. We should say: what is Armenia signing? Are we against it?” This is one motherland, yes, they are different states, but they are so interconnected that the fate of Armenia and the Armenian people also depends on the fate of Artsakh, that’s why we don’t present ultimatums to someone, no, we say: dear people, that’s it, we are united”, therefore it should be so that the fate of Artsakh is not endangered, because it is not the only danger, there will be genocide, after that, they will pass to Armenia. Artsakh is a heavy thing, but not a burden. There was a shield, and the shield must be heavy, there is no paper shield. Now you see, don’t you, that Artsakh is wounded, that shield is broken, what dangers have arisen for mother Armenia.”
Another question: “on one hand, the Artsakh government welcomes Russia’s decision to recognize the independence of Donetsk and Luhansk, on the other hand, it appeals to the international community to recognize the independence of Artsakh; don’t you think that you are pursuing a miscalculated policy in this matter?”
The Foreign Minister of Artsakh replied. “Kosovo was also mentioned in this statement of the National Assembly. That is, we should be as objective as possible. The problem is not that we should evaluate who is right and who is wrong. Now the western world does not accept anything related to Russia, this is clear because their relations have entered a rather heated period, Russia and a number of other countries do not accept, for example, what is happening in the Western bloc. Same for Kosovo – there are completely different opinions about it.”
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Artsakh stressed that “we must try any right to self-determination and use the fact of its implementation, prove that it is so, and we can get some benefit from it.”
“Our task is not to go in and see who is right and who is wrong. First of all, this is not our job. Secondly, we do not have that resource and there is no point in getting involved in all that,” Babayan added.
