Moscow's actions endanger the prospects of establishing peace - UN Secretary-General
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated that Moscow's actions threaten the prospects of peace in the region.
If Russia goes ahead with its plans to annex four regions of Ukraine, it would mean a dangerous escalation that would threaten the prospects for peace in the region, the UN secretary-general said yesterday.
"Any decision to annex Ukraine's Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporozhye regions will have no legal force and deserves condemnation," Antonio Guterres told reporters.
The permanent representation of Russia at the United Nations accused Guterres of violating the charter of the organization.
"We are sorry for the statement of the UN Secretary-General. Regarding the situation created around Ukraine, the Secretary General of the United Nations consistently shows the same selective approach as the countries of the collective West, literally putting himself in the same row with them," the Russian mission said in a statement.
