With the restoration of the independence of Armenia, the adoption of a new national constitution became inevitable in 1991. The Constitution was adopted on July 5, 1995, by a nationwide referendum, later amended by referendums (2005, 2015). After the adoption of the Constitution, July 5 became a state holiday - Constitution Day.
The Constitution of the Republic of Armenia is the basis of the country's legal system, the main law of the country, to which all other laws and legal acts must comply. The Constitution is also a value-ideological document, which defines the most basic principles of social organization, the practical application and strengthening of which the state should strive for.
"The Armenian people adopt the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia based on the basic principles and national goals of the Armenian statehood enshrined in the Declaration of Independence of Armenia, the holy message of their freedom-loving ancestors to restore the sovereign state, dedicated to strengthening and prospering the homeland, ensuring the freedom of generations," the RA Constitution begins with these lines.
The Constitution enshrined the nature of the Republic of Armenia as a sovereign, democratic, legal-social state, proclaimed the basic human rights and freedoms of a citizen, defined the rule of the republic based on the principle of separating the legislative, executive, and judicial powers.
In 2017 the amendment made to the RA Law on Holidays and Remembrance Days of the Republic of Armenia also fixed the state symbols of the day. The state symbols are the flag, the coat of arms, the anthem - "Our Homeland". A festive march is traditionally held on this day.
July 5 is a non-working day in Armenia.
