Opposition’s bill on criminalizing expressions against Armenian sovereignty, territorial integrity turned down |armenpress.am|

armenpress.am։ An opposition-authored bill seeking to criminalize “any expressions against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Armenia” failed to pass parliament.

The bill received only 30 votes in favor, while 63 voted against and 1 present. The ruling Civil Contract party voted against.

Co-author of the bill, MP Aram Vardevanyan argued that the bill aimed at becoming also a measure for holding to account those who make threatening or false statements on Armenia from abroad.

However, the ruling Civil Contract party opposed the bill, arguing that the bill has no foreign policy goal whatsoever. Majority Leader Hayk Konjoryan said they believe that the opposition seeks “concealed” goals with the bill.
