An EU civilian mission will be established in Armenia - The EU Council approved the decision

The EU Council agreed on the creation of a European Union civilian mission in Armenia within the framework of the Common Security and Defense Policy (CSDP). We learn about this from the website of the EU Council.

According to the statement, the purpose of the mission is to contribute to stability in the border regions of Armenia, to build local confidence, and to provide an environment conducive to EU-supported efforts to normalize relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

The EU civilian mission will initially be deployed for two years and the administrative headquarters will be in Armenia. The Civil Operations Commander will be Stefano Tomat. In the near future, ahead of the mission will be appointed to lead the operations on the ground.

"The establishment of the EU mission in Armenia is the start of a new phase of EU involvement in the South Caucasus. The EU will continue to support de-escalation efforts and is committed to working closely with both sides to achieve the ultimate goal of sustainable peace in the region," said EU High Representative Joseph Borrell.

In response to Armenia's request, the EU mission will carry out regular patrols and report on the situation, which will strengthen the EU's understanding of the situation on the ground. The mission will also contribute to mediation efforts within the framework of the process led by the President of the European Council, Charles Michel.
