There is no need to endow peacekeepers with a UN mandate in Karabakh - Russian MFA

There is no need to endow Russian peacekeepers with a UN mandate in Nagorno-Karabakh, and Baku and Yerevan agree with and support the way they work.  Pyotr Ilyichev, Director of the Department of International Organizations of the Russian Foreign Ministry, said this in a conversation with "RIA Novosti".

"The only guarantor of maintaining stability in the NK conflict zone is the Russian peacekeeping contingent, which does not need to be given a UN mandate, because the methods of our peacekeepers' activities are already clearly defined in the first tripartite agreement.  Statement of the leaders of Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia on November 9, 2020.  In this regard, there is a consensus among the participants of the dispute, and this fact is key here," said Ilyichev.

According to him, it should be especially noted that "the activities of Russian peacekeepers are supported both in Baku and Yerevan, which is of key importance in the context of the uncertainty of the final status of the territory".

It should be noted that on December 29, Nikol Pashinyan announced during the government session:  "If Russia is unable to ensure stability and security in Nagorno-Karabakh for objective or subjective reasons, I think that it should organize a discussion in the UN Security Council and Nagorno-Karabakh to endow the Russian peacekeeping force with a mandate from the UN Security Council or an additional multinational in Nagorno-Karabakh  to raise the issue of sending a peacekeeper.  Such a question arises also because the closing of the Lachin Corridor is not the first case of Azerbaijan invading the zone of responsibility of the Russian peacekeeping force in Nagorno-Karabakh.  This was preceded by the situations of Parukh and Khtsaberd, as a result of which around three dozen citizens of RA continue to remain captive.
