The US Permanent Representative to the UN called for opening two new checkpoints for cross-border aid in Syria |armenpress.am|

The United States is urging the UN Security Council to vote on a resolution to open two additional checkpoints in Syria for cross-border aid delivery.

Linda Thomas-Greenfield, US Permanent Representative to the World Organization, issued a message about this. "The humanitarian crisis caused by the February 6 earthquakes in Turkey and Syria requires urgent action by the international community. At this point, every hour counts," she stated.

We have heard calls from UN leadership for the Security Council to authorize the opening of two additional checkpoints to bring vital aid to people in northwest Syria. The people of the affected regions are counting on us, the diplomat said, adding that they should immediately vote for the resolution.

On February 9, the "Bab al-Hawa" checkpoint, through which humanitarian aid is delivered from Turkey to the northwest of Syria, resumed work. According to TASS, this is the only checkpoint that operates within the framework of the cross-border aid mechanism approved by the UN Security Council. After the earthquake, it was closed due to damage to the road, and its capacity decreased.

Western countries and the United Nations seek to open additional checkpoints for cross-border aid. On February 9, the Secretary General of the World Organization, Antonio Guterres, expressed hope that the members of the UN Security Council would be able to reach an agreement on opening additional checkpoints for the transportation of aid from Turkey to Syria. Syria insists that humanitarian aid throughout the country should be provided at the behest of central authorities in Damascus.
