The purpose of the EU mission is to make sure that there are no invasions into the territory of Armenia - CE deputy |azatutyun.am|

The main goal of the European Union mission, being at the borders of Armenia, is to make sure that there are no incursions into the territory of Armenia. French member of the European Parliament in Yerevan, Natalie Loiseau, said this.

"This mission was started after the Prague summit when France and the European Union committed to Armenia and Azerbaijan to deploy an EU mission. The mission will reach 100 people as quickly as possible, in a few days, in a few weeks, at the moment there are 50 observers here. This is a civilian mission, which means that the observers are not armed, their purpose is to patrol, to make sure, to confirm that there are no incursions into the territory of Armenia, skirmishes, or resumption of violence along the entire border between Armenia and Azerbaijan. This commitment, in my opinion, is very important, highly appreciated by the European Union, whose main goal is to inspire confidence in the local population," said the member of the European Parliament.

The French member of the European Parliament, Natalie Loiseau, reminded that the Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee, with its report, demanded that Azerbaijan withdraw its armed forces from the sovereign territory of Armenia and return to their previous positions.

"We have often heard that Azerbaijan demanded to respect its territorial integrity, Armenia also has the right to protect its territorial integrity, and this is not subject to discussion," he added.

According to a member of the European Parliament, the fact that there is no final delimitation between Armenia and Azerbaijan is not an obstacle to border monitoring.

"We all know that there is no final and precise demarcation between the parties, and that is one of the conditions for the establishment of peace. It is desirable that the work of that commission progress, at the same time, no one can deny that what happened in September was an invasion and attack on the sovereign territory of Armenia. The villages that were targeted are Armenian-inhabited settlements managed by the state of Armenia, therefore, it is Armenia that was targeted," the deputy noted.

It should be reminded that on January 23, the EU Council reached an agreement on the creation of a civilian mission of the European Union in Armenia. The mission started its work on the 20th of February. Among the exclusively civilian staff of the EU mission in Armenia are 100 people, including about 50 unarmed observers. The operational headquarters of the mission will be located in Yeghegnadzor, Vayots Dzor, RA.

The Russian Foreign Ministry responded that Moscow views the EU civilian mission in Armenia as an attempt to push Russia out of the region.
